A dog will often work to please you. A cat will not. Point that difference in the wrong direction and you get the most common excuse in the cat world: "you can't train a cat." Point it in the right direction and it becomes your single biggest advantage. Cats train beautifully. They simply work for outcomes they want, not for your approval, and once you understand that, the whole job gets easier.

The stubborn-cat myth

The belief that cats are untrainable is not just wrong, it is expensive. Owners who believe it stop trying. The peeing, the scratching, the biting go unsolved, the frustration builds, and far too many of those cats end up in shelters. The truth is plainer and kinder: a cat that ignores you is not being stubborn.

The training myth is the false idea that cats are too independent or aloof to learn from people. In reality cats learn constantly. They just need a reason that matters to them, not to you.

You have already seen the proof. Run a can opener and Milo, a perfectly ordinary household tabby, comes flying into the kitchen. Nobody sat down to teach that. Milo heard a sound, food appeared, and he linked the two. Shake a treat bag and watch the same thing happen. That is real learning, and your cat does it every single day whether you plan it or not.

Two ways cats learn

Almost everything a cat learns runs through one of two channels. The first is about consequences.

Operant conditioning is learning by consequence: a behavior that pays off happens more often, and a behavior that leads nowhere fades away.

When Milo paws the cupboard and a treat falls out, pawing the cupboard gets stronger. The outcome shaped the behavior. The second channel is about associations.

Classical conditioning is learning by association: a neutral thing that reliably predicts something meaningful starts to trigger the same response on its own.

The can opener means nothing to a kitten. But pair its sound with dinner enough times and the sound alone makes Milo run and drool. The sound now predicts food, so it carries the food's pull.

Both channels run inside one simple cycle you can watch in any cat.

Every behavior sits inside a loop: a cue, the action, and the outcome that decides whether it repeats.

Something happens first (the antecedent, like the can opener). The cat does something (the behavior, like running to the kitchen). Then an outcome follows (the consequence, like food). A good outcome feeds back and makes that behavior more likely the next time the same cue shows up.

What this means for training

If learning is just cue, behavior, and outcome, then training is simply you taking charge of those pieces on purpose. You control what comes before, you mark the behavior you want, and you control what follows. Do nothing deliberate and the cat still learns, only from whatever happens by accident.
