Introduction

The four main asset types that securities fall under when investing are equity, fixed income or bonds, cash or cash equivalents, and real assets. An example of equity security is a stock, which denotes ownership. If you possess shares of a company, you are a part-owner of the business and are entitled to vote on things such as the board of director’s composition and other crucial corporate decisions. For example, if a company has 100,000 shares and you purchase 10,000 shares, you own 10% of the company. This course will take you through all that you need to know about the stock market, identify red flags, and ultimately, get started investing in this financial market

What are Stocks?

Stocks are units of ownership in one or more companies. The owner, known as a shareholder, will also have the right to share the company's profits if dividends are paid and voting rights if granted by the company. 

"Stocks" generally refer to holdings in various companies. 
The plural term "shares" defines a company's ownership units.

The term "equity" refers to the total participation in the company's share capital after the payment of any debt.

How do Stocks Work?

Stocks give you direct exposure to a company's performance. The value of the shares will go up when the company's performance is good and will go down when it is not. Institutions known as stock exchanges facilitate the exchange of publicly traded stocks. For this, the company must go public, and the most used way to do it is by making a public sale offer. If a company were a pie, the shares would be small slices that any interested person could buy. In other words, buying a share means owning that small part of the company and gaining a stake. For this to occur, the company must be a public limited company and duly registered on the stock market.
